Considering the real life , games can certainly do teach us and guide us through many different situations and problems of real life though there are certain limitations with this medium . (well this is my point of view some may differ from this belief )
Nevertheless many instances can be taken from games which simulates the real life environment.
For example : The game called “The Sims” introduced masses a different form of simulation although simulation has always been present in our culture through games but is an one of a kind game which dared to start simulation on more complex systems such as human life . The Sims is based on simulation of regular people known as sims – in everyday situation in an American , suburban environment.
The Sims is a departure from most other computer games, which tend to have a definite goal or objective. Instead, the game focuses entirely on the "lives" of virtual people called "Sims," placing the player in control of their virtual "world", and their daily activities such as sleeping, eating, cooking and bathing, to name a few.
Sims have a certain amount of free will (if it is enabled in-game), and although the player can instruct them to do something, they may decide that something else needs to be done first, or even outright ignore the player's commands. The player must make decisions about time spent in personal development, such as exercise, reading, creativity, and logic, by adding activities to the daily agenda of the Sims. Daily maintenance requirements must also be scheduled, such as personal hygiene, eating, and sleeping. If the simulated humans do not perform the proper amount of maintenance, they will sicken and die. Furthermore, Sims need to have fun; if they don't, the fun level bar eventually lowers and they become depressed, but however depressed they become, they are unable to commit suicide (they are not programmed to do so). They are, however, able to be nasty to other Sim characters by insulting them, slapping them and even attacking them. Financial health is simulated by the need to send the Sims to find jobs, go to work, pay bills, and take advantage of personal development and social contacts to advance in their jobs.
This because of all the above features the game succeeds at delivering an enjoyable experience which also teaches us various aspects of our lives .
ANOTHER great example that I would like to give from my side is about the Tycoon series games.
These games teaches the money aspect of life by simulating a certain type of business . The series is divided into Roller coaster tycoon for simulating an amusement park business , Railroad tycoon which deals with trains and transport system or pizza tycoon in which one can run a pizza store or even an chain of pizza brand .
I would like describe The roller coaster tycoon as I have spent lots of time in front of the green screen .
The premise of the game is to complete a series of preset scenarios by successfully building and maintaining theme parks. The key to any park is building a large amount and diverse range of rides for the visitors. Players can choose from dozens of roller coaster types and can also build log flumes, carousels, bumper cars, haunted houses, go karts, Gravitrons, Ferris wheels, and swinging ships, among other rides. The player can also build their own roller coaster design, laying out individual track pieces, choosing direction, height, and steepness, and adding such as elements as zero g rolls, corkscrews, vertical loops, and even on-ride photos. The intensity and type of rides must be balanced, as visitors' preferences vary significantly from person to person; some prefer exciting rides and have high nausea tolerance levels, while others are just the opposite. Rollercoasters must be designed carefully so that they do not crash. Rollercoaster typically happen when a crest on the track is too high that the vehicles could not get passed it and go backwards instead, moving towards an oncoming vehicle on the track and destroying one of the two vehicles. On some types of rollercoasters such as the dinghy water slide and bobsled rollercoaster, cars can crash by flying off the track by going over a crest too fast. A crash can also happen on a rollercoaster when the brakes at the station malfunction and a vehicle travels at high speed and smashes into a stationed vehicle. Whenever a crash happens, that ride is instantly closed. Any people on a coaster vehicle that crashed will be instantly killed. When a roller coaster opens after a crash, most people will be afraid to go on that ride for quite some time.
That is why playing this game can teach and guide an aspiring business man who plans to build his own theme park .
